SPED 863: Student Engagement in School and Community

Description: The Student Engagement course is designed for professionals who are seeking to promote, develop and implement work-based learning (WBL) experiences for youth in transition, through the establishment of strong working relationships with local businesses. It will spend time exploring student engagement strategies to meet the needs of these learners. The importance of work experience in authentic settings – in connection with rigorous academic programming – is well-documented in the research literature. In fact, it is one of the 16 predictors of post high school success for young adults with disabilities. Setting up and operating a strong WBL program within a classroom, school, and/or district requires support from multiple stakeholders, including school leadership personnel and policy-makers; therefore this course addresses factors that help or hinder implementation at both the student and systemic levels. Course participants will learn about numerous practical resources for building a WBL program from the ground up – or enhancing an existing program. Ultimately resulting in student engagement for youth in transition.
